在山東省青島附近的沙灘，突然變成一片片綠油油的草地，驟眼看還以為在愛爾蘭或澳洲等的大草原，但原來這些草，是來自海裏的海藻大量漂到陸地，而且這情況已經連續8年在夏天發生。

在2007年的春季，就在北京和上海之間的海岸，即青島附近的沙灘，有農民利用木艇，在對開的海岸種植食用海藻，但當他們收割後，令在黃海中的海水養分大量增加，為其他海藻的生長創造了合適條件，故近8年夏天都出現這種「海藻潮」的盛況。

而近年，這片「海藻潮」更有擴大的跡象，有專家認為是因為那些農夫近年在離岸更出的地方去種植，故令水中的養分進一步擴散開去，令海藻潮的面積更大。2013年，海藻覆蓋的範圍更與美國康涅狄格州的面積相若。

不過，海藻潮卻成了近年青島市民和旅客的最新夏日熱點，紛紛前去與海藻玩遊戲，但專家提醒，那些海藻混雜了農業和工業廢物，可能會影響健康，而且還要勞煩一班工人去清理海藻，因為當它們開始分解後，會發出異常惡臭，但濕了水的海藻其實非常重，在2013年，總共有19800噸的海藻被清除，即大約有9900架私家車的重量。
